Long sleeve describes sleeve coverage, not one fixed fit. A close Baby Rib tee sits differently from a generous open-end cotton crew, while a cropped hem changes proportion without changing sleeve length. Choose a lighter knit for low-bulk layering or a heavier jersey or thermal when you want the shirt to carry more of the outfit.

At Los Angeles Apparel, we make the styles featured here in Los Angeles, in fabrics ranging from 4.3 oz Fine Jersey to heavyweight thermal. Use the comparisons below to find a starting point, then check the current colors and measurements for the style you choose.

Compare Six Long Sleeve Styles

These styles cover six distinct jobs: a substantial everyday crew, a lighter layer, a fitted rib tee, two different cropped proportions and a heavyweight mockneck. Start with the row that sounds closest to what you need.

Style Fit Fabric / weight Best starting point
1807GD Crew Unisex, generous body, higher crew neckline 6.5 oz, 100% USA cotton, 18/1 open-end jersey; garment dyed A substantial everyday long sleeve with a broken-in finish
20007 Fine Jersey Classic unisex crew 4.3 oz, 30/1 combed ring-spun cotton; Heather Grey is a cotton/poly blend A lighter, smoother long sleeve for lower-bulk layering
43007 Baby Rib Fitted, mid-to-full length women’s tee 100% cotton 1x1 Baby Rib; Heather Grey is a cotton/poly blend A close everyday layer with rib stretch
83079GD Crop Fitted, cropped, high crew neckline Heavyweight 95% cotton / 5% elastane; garment dyed A smooth, compressive crop with full sleeves
1839GD Cropped Tee Women’s boxy, relaxed, mid-waist crop 6.5 oz, 100% USA-grown cotton, 18/1 open-end jersey A crop with T-shirt structure instead of compression
1406GD Mockneck Unisex, loose and boxy with a higher neckline 7.5 oz, 100% USA-grown cotton, 14/1 open-end jersey A heavier modern shape with more collar presence

Start With the Silhouette

The fastest way to narrow the category is to choose the body shape. A unisex crew leaves room through the body and sleeves, a fitted rib tee follows the torso, and a crop changes where the shirt ends. None is universally better; each creates a different base for the rest of the outfit.

How Fabric Weight Changes Fit and Layering

Fabric weight changes more than warmth. Lighter fine jersey creates less bulk under another layer. Midweight open-end cotton has more structure and a drier T-shirt hand. A heavier open-end jersey or thermal becomes more visible in the outfit and may need more room under a jacket.

Weight numbers are only useful within context: knit structure, yarn, fiber blend and finish also affect how a shirt drapes. Baby Rib, for example, is best understood through its stretch and close fit rather than by forcing it into the same weight scale as open-end jersey.

Check the Shoulder, Hem, Cuff and Neckline

A useful fit check starts at the shoulder and works down. Decide how much room you want through the chest, where the hem should land, whether the cuff should stay close to the wrist, and how much neckline height you want near the face. Then compare those preferences with the size chart and product-specific fit notes.

01 · Shoulder & chestChoose ease deliberately

A generous unisex body leaves room and reads relaxed. A fitted rib or elastane blend follows the torso and works as a closer base layer.

02 · Body lengthMatch the hem to the outfit

Full length adds coverage and tucking options. A crop meets higher rises sooner and changes the proportion without changing sleeve coverage.

03 · Sleeve & cuffCheck reach and stacking

A close cuff keeps the sleeve controlled under jackets; a roomier sleeve can stack at the wrist and create a more relaxed line.

04 · NecklineUse the collar as structure

A standard crew is the most familiar. A higher crew or mockneck brings more visual weight to the top of the shirt.

How Long Sleeve Basics Work Across a Wardrobe

The strongest rotation is not necessarily a stack of identical shirts. It is a small set of repeatable shapes that cover different levels of bulk, body length and visual structure.

Everyday anchorA substantial unisex crew

Wear it alone with denim or trousers, or layer a lighter piece beneath when the generous body leaves room.

Close base layerFine jersey or fitted rib

Use lower bulk and a closer silhouette under overshirts, outerwear, dresses or knits.

Proportion shiftA fitted or boxy crop

Keep full sleeve coverage while moving the hem upward; choose compression or T-shirt structure based on the look you want.

Visible textureMockneck or thermal

Let the higher neckline, denser jersey or waffle texture act as a more pronounced outer layer.

Made in Los Angeles: From Fabric to Finished Shirt

We make the featured styles in Los Angeles, bringing fabric production, cutting, sewing and finishing together in one vertically integrated operation. Keeping those stages connected lets us develop the knit, body shape, sleeve, neckline and finish as parts of the same shirt.

Garment-dyed pieces are sewn before they are colored. Styles such as the 1807GD and 83079GD are also enzyme washed for a softer, broken-in result, so slight variation from one garment to the next is expected.

01 · FabricStart with the knit

Fine jersey, open-end jersey, Baby Rib and thermal structures create different levels of smoothness, stretch, body and texture.

02 · Cut & sewShape becomes fit

Pattern, body length, sleeve shape and neckline turn fabric into the unisex, fitted, cropped or mockneck silhouettes compared here.

03 · Dye & finishRead the exact style note

Garment dye and enzyme washing are style-specific; check the finish listed for the shirt you choose.

Care, Shrinkage and Garment-Dye Variation

Care changes with the fabric and finish. Several garment-dyed styles here are shrink-free or pre-washed, while the Baby Rib crew may shrink in washing. Pigment Vintage Black in the 1807GD can also transfer when wet and should be washed separately.

Style Care note Practical check
1807GD Crew Shrink-free garment dye; Pigment Vintage Black may transfer when wet. Wash that pigment color separately in cold water.
43007 Baby Rib Up to 7% wash shrinkage; designed to fit before and after washing. Use the size chart with the intended fitted silhouette in mind.
83079GD Crop Shrink-free garment dye; wash cold with like colors. Follow the product label to protect color and stretch.
1839GD Crop Shrink-free garment dye. Expect subtle garment-dye variation, not identical flat color.

TX407GD Thermal Garment dyed and laundered; pre-washed with no shrinkage. Account for the intentionally boxy fit before changing size.

Three Checks Before You Order

01 · MaterialRead beyond “cotton”

Check fiber blend, knit structure, weight and finish. Those details explain drape, stretch, bulk and surface feel.

02 · FitCompare shape, not only size

Unisex, fitted and cropped patterns solve different needs even when the size label is the same.

03 · UseKnow the job of the shirt

Decide whether it should be a close layer, a stand-alone tee, a proportion-changing crop or a textured outer piece.

Which Long Sleeve Should You Choose?

Choose the priority that matters most; each recommendation pairs that need with a fit and fabric to try first.

Everyday crewI want a roomy shirt with substance

Start with the 1807GD: a generous unisex fit, higher crew neckline and 6.5 oz open-end cotton with a garment-dyed finish.

Lighter layerI want a smoother shirt under jackets

Start with the 20007 Fine Jersey crew. Its 4.3 oz combed ring-spun jersey adds less bulk than the heavier open-end styles.

Close full-length fitI want stretch without a cropped hem

Start with the 43007 Baby Rib crew. The fitted, mid-to-full-length shape follows the body and layers neatly.

Fitted cropI want compression and a high crew

Start with the 83079GD. Its heavyweight cotton-elastane fabric creates a smooth, held-in crop with full sleeves.

View 83079GD →
Boxy cropI want a shorter tee without compression

Start with the 1839GD. It keeps the structure of a 6.5 oz cotton T-shirt while moving the hem to a relaxed mid-waist crop.

Heavy outer layerI want more weight, texture or a higher neckline

The 1406GD gives you a raised mockneck in 7.5 oz jersey; the TX407GD trades the raised neckline for heavyweight thermal texture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are basic long sleeve shirts unisex?

Some are unisex; others use women’s fitted or cropped patterns. Our 1807GD, 20007, 1406GD and TX407GD are unisex, while our 43007, 83079GD and 1839GD are women’s styles.

What is the difference between a long sleeve shirt and a long sleeve top?

A long sleeve shirt usually means a tee or crewneck, while long sleeve top is broader and can also include fitted, cropped and mockneck silhouettes.

Which long sleeve is best for layering?

For lower bulk, start with the 4.3 oz 20007 Fine Jersey or the fitted 43007 Baby Rib. If you want the underlayer to add structure, the 1807GD offers a heavier 6.5 oz jersey and a generous body.

What does garment dyed mean?

We sew garment-dyed pieces first and color them afterward. The process creates a softer, broken-in look, and subtle variation from one garment to the next is part of the result.

Do Los Angeles Apparel long sleeves shrink?

It depends on the style. Several garment-dyed styles are pre-washed or shrink-free, while the 43007 Baby Rib may shrink up to 7% in washing. Follow the sewn-in care label for the shirt you choose.

Should I size down in a unisex long sleeve?

Only if the product’s measurements and your preferred fit support it. The TX407GD page explicitly suggests sizing down for a more fitted look, while the 1807GD is intentionally generous. Compare measurements rather than using a universal rule.

Are these long sleeve shirts made in Los Angeles?

Yes. We make every style featured here in Los Angeles, where fabric production, cutting, sewing and finishing are part of our vertically integrated operation.

Where can I shop Los Angeles Apparel in person?

Choose the Fit First, Then the Fabric

For a relaxed everyday tee, begin with a unisex crew. Choose Fine Jersey or Baby Rib for a closer, lower-bulk layer; choose a cropped body to shift the proportion; move to a mockneck or thermal when you want more weight and texture.

Once the silhouette is right, compare measurements, available colors and care details before choosing your size.
